Playtonic Games: Studio works on new Yooka
Only recently, the Chinese Technik-Gigant Tencent secured a minority stake in the Developer Studio Platonic. What advantages this deal brings with him, Managing Director Gavin Price in conversation with Games industry explains.
In addition to a doubling of the studio size and the extension to three development teams, cooperation enabled work to a new 3D platform, which should act as a direct successor to the TOOK Lay lee published in 2017:
We were always in dialogue with Tencent. We talked to you about the future of 3D platform and our next steps. I mentioned that Platonic pursues this growth plan, which includes many people and many teams. They said, do not hope that these conversations really like them, and they want to talk about how Tencent could contribute.
I was surprised because I did not expect that you are interested in Platonic. It turned out that they had a department for Genres, including a division for 3D platformers. So we had to formalize our future content plan a little. And we also wanted to pursue an ambitious goal of making Yooka-Laylee to an IP that could appear on the children's menu box of a large fast food chain.
They liked the studio and what we have published before, and they thought they could help us achieve these goals. And everything started very quickly. All were there, so we just handed it the lawyers and waited for me to tell me it's done.
In addition, Price indicated the possibility of opening a new headquarters for Platonic Games as well as other branches. The acquisition of other studios is also in the range of possible, so the Managing Director.
